The Andaman Sea southern Thailand is famous for beach getaways. Thousands of beaches and hundreds of islands make it hard to choose just the right vacation destination. The Thailand Andaman Sea boasts some of the best ocean waters, coral reefs and marine life. Almost all Thailand sea destinations offers exceptional snorkeling and scuba diving excursions, often by liveaboard or daytrips with the dive vessel. An outstanding scuba diving destination are the Similan Islands off Khao Lak accessible by liveaboard tours from Phuket, by speedboat from Khao Lak and from the Lam Ru Pier a couple of kilometers before Khao Lak.
Plenty of tropical fish, sea snakes, sea horses, whale sharks, white sharks, sting rays and squids of any size reside in these waters.

The
Andaman Islands number more than
two thousand over the whole Andaman
Sea part of the Indian Ocean, means,
the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the
islands in the Myanmar part of the
Andaman Sea which is mainly southern
Myanmar and the Myeik or Mergui
Archipelago plus the islands in
front of the Andaman Coast of
Thailand, all with a great Andaman
Beach after another. At southern
Thailand this are mainly Surin
Islands, Similan Islands and the
islands around Phuket. Further south
and east are the islands of the
Phang Nga Bay, the Krabi Islands,
the islands of the Trang Thailand
Archipelago and further down south
west Ko Tarutao and the other
islands in the Tarutao Archipelago
including Ko Lipe and more. This
extends into Malaysia with the area
around Penang and Langkawi. Looking
at the geographical distribution of
the islands it could be said that
Phuket is the center of the Andaman
Sea in terms of today tourism and
Patong Beach is undeniable the most
famous beach in the Andaman Sea.
The
people of the Andaman Sea are
very diverse, there are the people
of the Indian Andaman and the sea
gypsies of the Myeik or Mergui
Archipelago which where stone age
Negritos until roughly when the
English colonialists came. All other
islands and costal areas have a
mixed population of Malay and traces
of Arabs, Chinese, Portuguese,
Burmese, and Indian etc. The island
world of the Andaman is known since
ancient times, already Ptolemy is
believed to have known about. In his
discussion of the ethnology,
languages and anthropology of the
Andaman peoples he acknowledges the
contributions of another authority
on the Islands, V. Solomon, a Indian
from Madras who obviously stayed on
the Andaman and Nicobar islands for
several years.
The
reason why Phuket Thailand is
more or less considered as a center
of the Andaman Sea is, the islands
on the Myanmar side are difficult to
access so are the Andaman Islands in
Indian waters. |

the casual traveler and also from a
ethnological point of view......Facts about the Salon - Moken the
actual sea gypsies, were
first discovered in the travel
diary of a Frenchman published in 1675. In
Morris
Collis's "Siamese White" they were called
Silita.
In 1891 census report of Kawthoung Township,
they were called Silone.

Long long ago there was a
Salon young man by the name of Ah Nine who was very brave and
skillful at fishing in the sea. He had a lover named Bu Ngan
(Miss Flower). They
were highly pleased with their lives
because
they loved each other and their parents
on both sides were friends. Ah Nine
saved money working hard in fishery.
Similar to him, Bu Ngan also saved money working hard on
taking out barnacles and making
grass-mats. Looking forward to the
ceremonies of their forthcoming
engagement and wedding, they both were
excited with happiness.
When the young man would have
enough money, he used to send a woman as
a matchmaker, carrying his
earrings, a sarong and some other things, to
the parent of his girl, for engagement. If they disagreed they would return back the
items. If they give their consent, they
wound have alcoholic drinks together in the
honor of the successful engagement. |
Then, the young man could visit
the girl's house during nighttime. The young
man have to make a Kaban boat
where the whole family could live, it is the mark of his ability.
Then, he would have to look for a dog and train to be obedient to
him. After completion of these formalities, wedding ceremony could
be held. At which, they would pray Katoi Nat spirit; requesting for
protection from misfortunes.
Wedding ceremony was a feast held in
the company of bride and groom, together with the parents of
both sides and invited guests. After the
wedding ceremony, the groom lived with his
bride in her house for six months or one
year; taking responsibilities of looking
after her family, as it had been already
agreed to at the time of engagement. After
that period, the couple could live in a
separate house, particularly on a house boat
in the Andaman Sea.
Trying hard to take the ambergris
of the Andaman Sea, time passed unnoticed.
He had forgotten to attribute to the Rain-god. By the time, rain
became heavy; wind blew hard; sea became tempestuous; and lightning
flashed. Ah Nine was streaked by a thunderclap while he was lying on
his back in the hull of his boat, and passed away.
Thus, Ah Nine and Bu Ngan worked hard for money. One day the sea
began tempestuous. While rowing his boat, Ah Nine saw a cluster of
ambergris floating in the water. If he would have got it; would have
peace of mind for their wedding. Ambergris was as valuable as edible
bird-nest. Bu Ngan was happy in his imagination. When the dark
clouds were cleared off in the sky, he wound be
capable to take the ambergris out of water. Ah Nine prayed and requested the
Rain-god to wipe off the dark clouds. When the ambergris was in received, the
Rain-god would be given a devotional offering. His prayer was
answered.
In the next
morning, he was searched for all over the sea. They found him
lying dead in the floating boat. Beside him in the hull was a
cluster of ambergris. Bu Ngan also died of broken heart. Salon
believed that an island called island of
Poverty still existed in the Myeik
archipelago, on which no tree was grown and
nobody used to reach there - It was a transformation of Bu Ngan's body. Thus, Salon dare not sleep on the back while it
was raining; Salon pay tribute to Rain-god and prayed for the
pathetic couple whenever it was raining. This story is still
popular today.
