- Bangkok Airport or Suvarnabhumi, located in the “Cobra Swamps"
is a great modern
composition of steel and glass, unfortunately its already to small and not
very good organized. There are some positive and some
negative sides, two outstanding positive features of the
airport are the architecture and second is the attempt to
integrate Thai art into Suvarnabhumi Airport. When one walk to or come from
the gates great Thai paintings are decorating the concrete walls,
the airport is a real show case of Thailand contemporary
art its a new concept for flights to Bangkok.
There
are several other airports around;
this is the old Bangkok
Don Muang
airport in the north of Bangkok city, it is used by the military
and some domestic airlines now.
The other is U Tapao airport south of Suvarnabhumi and
Pattaya and the
third is Hua Hin airport about 120km southwest of Bangkok on
the seaside.
U Tapao Airport is
close to Pattaya and was heavy used by US military during
the Vietnam War. That actually was the reason for the rise of Pattaya as a
nightlife
center in Thailand for US military personal at the time. Recently U
Tapao
was revived during the airport blockade of the so
called yellow shirts democrats who held thousands of foreign tourists
hostage. Now U Tapao its only used by Bangkok Air for
some Thailand domestic flight.
Aside of the architecture Suvarnabhumi is more or
less a normal international airport, has the usual duty free
shops, but they are quite expensive, almost any item sold
under “duty free” is cheaper down town including the duty.

runs parallel to the motorway from Bangkok
airport to city. The airport economy parking is also a little better as in
the old Don Muang airport, at least now they wont allow the
car parking just behind a other car and fly away, nobody cared what
happen if the owner of the blocked car comes back
more early
than the car owner who blocks, it is really unbelievable what is happening. But now
they start to tow away the cars which make
the problems. The other day this happen to
me in a Bangkok shopping center I couldn’t get out
anymore, this careless people really thinks the others
should push and pull the blocking car to get out, actually
this is standard procedure in Thailand almost everywhere not
only at Suvarnabhumi.

This new Asia airport never close, Bangkok travel is
open 24 hours. Aircraft flights come in and out only from
about 5 am to about midnight. Actually there is continuous
struggle from the people living in the airport Bangkok
vicinity because of the noise of the landing

and starting
aircrafts. Actually this new international
airport with BKK
code, seems to be
already to small or rather it appears to be small since it
is not organized very well. At airport
arrivals and departures usually are long cues at the immigration, this is particular
visible when more than one wide body
aircraft arrives at the same time. It is a
real puzzle since at Singapore arrival with
a similar situation I never saw a cue
anywhere and the Singapore immigration just
do exactly the same job finally as the
Bangkok immigration, on top of it most of
the time only about half of the immigration
counters at arrival and departure are open.
It seems that Suvarnabhumi its not to small, its only not organized appropriate.
Suvarnabhumi
is visually a great piece of architecture in similar style like the new Airports
at Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Only technically and
especially from the organization its not so super dupy.
There is simply not a high level
in terms of logistic and how the
people are organized to work. The old airport Bangkok at Don Muang had a similar problem; almost
everything is too slow and too little. Even this whole
Bangkok international airport is, as the people say already
to small now when it just started.
There are several restaurants in the
transit lounge and in the departure
hall.
There
is a
hotel near the airport and
some other hotels are near to the airport,

actually it’s
only
a short ride to Bangkok city
with the car, taxi or Bangkok
airport link, means the airport Bangkok
location is no big deal anymore.
The most important concerning hotels
in Bangkok is.
No matter where you are, make sure
there is a entrance to the elevated
Bangkok circular road nearby and /
or, make sure you stay somewhere
near the elevated rail link or at
least near the BTS

near to the
subway.
Once you are forced to hit the road
elsewhere you are lost in terms of
time because of the traffic jam. Forget the airport Bangkok bus
since this bus is just using the
normal road downtown Bangkok and
this means endless traffic jam. If
you have enough from the big city
take a Thailand airline such as
Bangkok Airways, Air Asia or other
and travel to Phuket,
rent a car
or a motorbike and hit the
Andaman Sea.

.distances is wrong. The escalator won’t help a lot
and also usually
trolleys are hard to find, they always store them
somewhere where they are impossible to find.

available. For both business and leisure travelers
for relax and smooth away the rough edges of air
travel. In these lounges, for the most part, you
find yourself greeted like a VIP instead of a
potential terrorist, finding a quiet place where you
can check e-mail, or even take a nap. At airport
Bangkok, Thai Airways' Royal Orchid lounge provides
meeting rooms and complimentary transportation. Most
other international carrier offer first-class
lounges and business-class lounges. Beside of the

The Bangkok
international airport is open 24 hours, means you
can also find a quiet corner, on this subject you

There are also
several bars, restaurants, bookshops and all the
usual airport duty free shops around. A few minutes
walk brings the traveler to the Suvarnabhumi
Hotel which is more or less integrated into
the airport.
When you finally come to the luggage
pick up you have a good chance that your luggage
is already waiting for you.
They also have a
luggage storage, if you want to use it, make sure
all you luggage is locked orderly, this is very
important!

can find airport limousine, the Airport
train link and other
transportation including 2 taxis counter, Taxi is
very slow because understaffed, they
are two ladies, one of them is always eating and / or
chattering on the hand phone, the other lady fills

small tickets which the passenger has to give to the
taxi driver, all this is very slow and many times
there are no taxis at all. There is also a bus
terminal where buses to various cities in
Thailand are starting, one of this is a bus
to Pattaya which is not far to the south.
Make sure you ignore the people who are
standing around in the hall and offer you
taxi, they will just cheat you. Also
don't book a hotel through the airport hotel
booking counter they will overcharge you and
claim commission from the hotel you go. Also
never tell the taxi driver you have no hotel
he will take you somewhere and claim a high
commission to the hotel and the hotel will charge you
for. Now you will leave Bangkok international
airport or Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport
and move
to downtown.
If you don't have a hotel yet just go to the
Silom / Surawong area, there are plenty of
hotels. But in any case if you come to
Bangkok make sure you have a hotel booking
otherwise you will run into problems.
Another positive feature
is
from airport
Bangkok to Pattaya its quick now, the
motorway from Bangkok downtown to the
airport has a direct airport road link to
the Chonburi motorway and Pattaya, this is
naturally the same for all the eastern
seaboard of the gulf of Thailand, includes
Koh Chang and Trat.

- Some time ago I
had a unpleasant surprise which left me stranded one night
in Bangkok at the new Airport.

I
came from
Yangon Myanmar or
Burma
and was not aware on the new Thai visa regulation allowing
only 90 days on normal tourist visa on arrival
within a 6 month period, this regulation was abandoned some
times after. Thai immigration
didn't allow me to pass and I had to
spend one night at the airport to get out
to Singapore in the morning.
The whole was not a big deal since the new airport Bangkok
is open

24 hour and it worked quite ok. On
top of it a very nice young lady from the private security
squad was assigned to take care of me, the idea was to make
sure I will leave in the morning and wont disappear. There
was also no possibility to use the
Airport Hotel since this
Suvarnabhumi hotel is outside the
transit area. |

There are a couple of areas assigned for rest and maybe
sleep and we were not alone,
about 50 others from all over the world tried to beat the
time in this one not so pleasant night in Bangkok, actually
I already much better nights in Bangkok. We had a couple of beers and
with the time it become quite a relaxed atmosphere,
from time to time some guys from the same security
company passed by and had a chat, they had a look after me when she had to
go somewhere for a few minutes. |

One of the major problem in a
case like this is, first, Thai International forced me
to buy a full fare ticket to Singapore, they refused to sell
me any other ticket beside the most expensive one, they very
badly took advantage of my unfortunate situation. But as
always they didn't think, what happen afterwards, since then
I never boarded a Thai International again, usually I used
them about once per week.
In the
transit area is a Automated Teller Machine or ATM
issuing only dollar, no Baht. It's only possible to buy the
airplane tickets from Thai International directly with cash and they
squeezed me merciless, they charged me almost 3 times the
normal price for a ticket to Singapore, actually since then
I never used Thai International again, that's my reaction on this.
The new Bangkok international
airport, also named Suvarnabhumi airport Bangkok or
aeroporto Bangkok is a huge new futuristic construction made
from steel, concrete and glass. international airport,
airport code for Bangkok is BKK.
The airport arrivals area is
not very good implemented, the walking distance from the
arrival gates to immigration and custom is simply to far,
this is not offset by the conveyor belts, its just to far.
The people who planned this airport had obviously some idea
how to build a steel, concrete, glass construction but for
sure no big knowledge how to organize the whole.
The new
Bangkok international airport or "Flughafen Bangkok" is still having a lot of
organizational problems even after several years in operation,
now August 2010 a expansion program was approved by the
government. One
of the other major problems was there are almost no toilets,
how can a airport planner not be able to handle this. Also
the restaurant area is much to small, there is one more
restaurant area on the top level, but quite expensive.
Bangkok to airport or vice
versa, works quite ok, the Airport train link was
opened 23. August 2010, read more about the link further
below. This Bangkok Airport Rail Link airport Bangkok
express link from downtown Bangkok to the airport is a real
relief.
Arriving with the
Taxi from Bangkok city via a excellent 4 -6
lane motorway works quite ok, no major disaster
happen even when the "cobra swamps" where the new
airport Bangkok is built into are full of water
during monsoon times.

Airport flight departures are done quick if they
have enough immigration personal dispatched to the
counters. Usually only around 40% of the counters
are open, that means very lonk cues and long time
waiting, but compared with JFK or LA International,
airport Bangkok is lightning fast.
Airport transfer Bangkok it easy, but as usual
not very organized, read the Taxi dilemma in the
text further down. The location of the new
airport Bangkok makes it easy to reach the eastern
seaboard of the Gulf of Thailand quick and without
major traffic problems. That means the way from
Bangkok to Pattaya is easy and quick plus the access
to the industrial area further down along the coast
towards Ranong is also a quickly. |

Now there are two airports in
Bangkok
the old airport at Don Muang and the new one.
Because of the organizational problems and a lack of quality
on certain parts of the new airport Bangkok, like cracks in
run and taxiways some of domestic air traffic was moved back
to the old airport Bangkok and moved back to Suvarnabhumi
airport again.

Transport.

The
Bangkok airport taxi
stand operation is
typical for the organization skills of the people who run the
airport Bangkok. The taxi stand at the new airport is downstairs and it is
not marked clearly, so the traveler run around with the heavy luggage,
down the escalator or lift to arrive at the taxi stand after a
while. At the taxi stand of Suvarnabhumi he or
she get a surprise, usually there are dozens of other travelers
cueing and waiting for a taxi. The experience is that at many times there are
no taxis at all or if there are some its necessary to go through via a
counter where 2 ladies issue a special paper to pass to the taxi
