- Khao Lak beach south
pine trees swing in the strong breeze hit by rain
from time to time.
The clouds moving in over the Indian Ocean
stall on the hills along the coast from Mergui in
Myanmar down to Ranong and Phuket.
This place is in Phang Nga Province north of Phuket,
the
weather bring more rain than to Phuket.
The beach is better in
the north as in the south.
There are
plenty of beach resorts. Very popular is diving a few kilometers out in the Andaman Sea. The
preferred dive area is around the Similan Islands. Practically every
hotel offers some kind of dive tour around the islands.
The Merlin Resort is at the south end of the long
stretch of beaches and on the almost north end is the Meridien.
There are plenty of other
hotels and resorts, some are expensive some are
more cheap. The cheaper hotels are between the road
and hill range, in the upper price category are the beach
resorts. In general, its a beach resorts and scuba
diving destination. Similan islands are out in the
Andaman
Sea and Khao Sok
National Park about 100 km to the north east, behind Takuapa.
Khao Lak Hotels are the Orchid,
Palm
Beach Resort, Paradise, Meridien and others. Since there no bigger town in
the area, only the village at the south end
there is no real nightlife available, actually there is one
cabaret style nightclub. The ideal vacation
destination for family holiday, beach vacation and people
who want to have a quiet life. Plus naturally scuba diving
and snorkeling in the Similan Archipelago.

From
Ranong
down to Takuapa
is Thailand Muslim county,
(Takuapa, the district capital is about 50 km north)
in every town and hamlet along the excellent road
one can see small mosques from where the the voices
of the muezzins can be heard. Men with the
Hajji cap and women with the scarf are common. Rather seldom are totally covered women where
one only see the
eyes, I wonder how they can stand this immense heat
and especially the
humidity, it must be like a moving sauna under this
black cloth. Sometimes Thai spirit houses and Wats show a
different direction of faith.
Probably the most
interesting place around is the Similan
Archipelago just a couple of km off the coast in the
turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea. A hidden paradise
with a great underwater world. Scuba diving and
snorkeling is
the real thing around here, you can book a day
or multiple day tour either in the hotels or the
travel agent. There are no hotels on the islands
only a few Thai style bungalows on the main Similan
island.
- After the Khao Lak
Tsunami
The international help after the
Khao Lak Tsunami was
overwhelming, a dozen or so NOG's opened offices
around Khao Lak

Khao Lak Tsunami Victims Thailand |
After the Tsunami nothing was happen for quite a while beside the
emergency relief. It somehow looked like the idling around the Khao Lak area was
because there are lots of land disputes after the Tsunami hit.
Many
local people who lived there for years or even for
decades are gone for ever. Many others luckily not,
but due to the situation with landownership this
people who want to redo their environment have no
paper showing they owned this land.
It is common practice in Thailand that when one stay on a piece of land
for a long time it become virtually his but not on paper.
A lot of people - in
Thailand they call them, influential figures - tried to exploit this
situation by claiming this have been their land, sometime they show fake land
title etc. and they have the material for blackmail, it was a weird situation.
After the old land owners fought back, their problem
is they have no money to pay the necessary motivation money needed, the others
have. Since this disputes especially around the Khao Lak region wont be cleared
so quick, it came to a standstill. But until now most of the disputes have been
settled. |
