Trang province in Thailand's south is a trade center since about 2000 years . Between the 6 th. and 12 th. century Trang in southern Thailand was a important seaport for trade towards the Malay Peninsular and the Islands of today's Indonesia.

From 600 AD to 1400 AD Trang Thailand was under the the Srivijaya empire centered in Jambi and Palembang on Sumatra. At that time Surat Thani in southern Thailand was a major center in this empire and Trang functioned as a transshipping point between Sumatra and the east coast of southern Thailand.

Today the importance of Trang as a seaport in the Andaman Sea is rather small.

You can wade far into the water it’s only sand with few stones or corals always very flat, wear shoes or diving boots to protect your feet. The limestone islands in this part of the Trang archipelago have small strips of yellow sand, the only visible beach of these islands. Other islands have a rather circular beach open to the ocean. We slowly moved towards the Morakot cave to swim into the huge black entrance and through total darkness to reach the interior of the emerald cave with its mythical emerald hue appearance. Inside the cave you can see the open sky since the ceiling of the cave eroded and crashed down hundreds of years ago. The air within was hot, some stalagmites of the cave were covered with a mosaic of shells. A small beach of yellow shell-sand behind the pool, just lay on the yellow sand and have a look for the sky. The cave entrance approximately 10 m wide - partially is under water and can be entered at low tide with a Kayak, of course one can swim in also through the approximately 80 m long canal. Emigrating to Penang in the early 19th century, this Fujianese family saw its fortune rising with the ebb and flow of the Penang trade.   From Penang, Soo Cheang and Sim Bee expanded their business to the rich tin-ore fields of Ranong, Trang and Phuket in Southern Thailand. They soon found their family fortune. Receiving his early education in China, Sim Bee spoke three languages - Malay, English and Thai - and five Chinese dialects. This came in handy in the business dealings of the Khaw family. In Penang, Sim Bee founded the Koe Guan Company Trang Islands Ltd, then one of the biggest shipping companies in British Malaya and which pioneered the insurance business in Malaya with his Khean Guan Insurance Company. Sim Bee also had business interests in Tongkah Harbour Tin Dredging Co Ltd and Eastern Shipping Co Ltd. Yet, unlike most tycoons of his days, Sim Bee was no ordinary businessman. He was a bureaucratic tycoon and an appointed Thai Governor of Kraburi, Trang and later the Monthon of Phuket. His commercial and business skills in Penang were put to good use in Southern Thailand.
